The Gladiators are being sent back into reserves for you to land-lease to an ally, assign to a less crucial front or scrap. I think you can scrap but as Japan by airfoce has always lagged behind and I've needed every plane I and now I'm just at war with the states so most planes are utterly irrelevant while my CAGs are crucial. The game does not magically convert any old equipment into new equipment but rather the new equipment gets issued out and the old taken back into stores.
I just completed the research for Coilguns and would like to upgrade my existing fleet for a damage boost. However, I'm not seeing an option for this anywhere. The only avenue I'm seeing is to design a new ship that uses Coilguns and build some of those. But if I have to keep incrementally upgrading tech and buying all new ships, then doing that again when I research the next level of tech, that seems horribly inefficient and I might want to simply wait for a few techs and batch them up in the new ship design.
However, if there is a way to partially upgrade already existing ships, that would be a huge benefit. I see an "Upgrade Fleet" option, but it is greyed out. So to upgrade your fleet you first need to update the ship design, you can go into the ship designer in the top left and add the Coilguns. What I think you may have done wrong is created a new ship design and added the Coilguns there instead of updating your current Papillon-class Corvettes.
When you change your ship design make sure you are modifying the Papillon-Class corvette and not creating a new class. If you want to change the name of the class you can do that in the ship building screen, if you create a new class it won't change the existing class. Right click in your home world with the ship selected and there will be a message to upgrade the fleet to the latest designs.

Paradox has made that most egregious of errors in this area: breaking something that was fixed. Where "Hearts of Iron 4" previously allowed players to deploy warships to fleet commands, home bases, and areas of operation, it now requires players to manage a tedious, confusing task force system. Want to send a massed fleet to contest Nazi U-Boat hunter groups in the mid-Atlantic? Forget it. The game will now split all your ships into random task forces.
Want to send warships into a Pacific Fleet under Adm. Chester Nimitz? The ships now seem to inevitably dissipate into various naval bases and sit there. Also, reserve fleets: They seem to absorb the main battle force even when the ships are needed for the front line. I used to annihilate Adm. Isoroku Yamamoto's navy by mid and corral Japan to the mainland by late Now, my navy is near defeat by early To be fair, I recognize that there are probably ways to mitigate the aggravation of these new complexities.
I get that some players may even enjoy the new changes. But the basic issue is that I do not. And reading reviews of the new naval system, I'm quite confident that many players share my frustration. The great irony here is that this was so unnecessary. Using industrial statistics from the period onward, it shows why America was always likely to win the World War II — even, for example, had the Soviet Union and Britain collapsed to Hitler and Australia to Japan.
But until the naval system goes back to that which wasn't broken, like Ireland in the s, I'm sitting out this war. Beltway Confidential. Washington Secrets. Tuesday April 14, Who has the power to reopen the economy?

I too wish there was an AI automation for assisting with replacement of ships -especially subs. It'd be fine if they just literally called the ships to port when one is ready, decommissioned the old one and added the new one to that fleet, but AFAIK that's not in the game. Arguably, it's about player's convenience. I don't think it usually makes much sense to decommission ships early in terms of strategy.
Figures it is better to just make them fight until they are sunk. Last edited by Radioactive ; 8 Jun, am.HOI4 Man the Guns How to Upgrade Ships (Hearts of Iron 4 MTG Expansion Guide)

But ships are a real investement, most of the US Battleships used in WWII were built during World War I or the early 20's, it's not a real quick process of "phasing out" older models of ships. Sure it does happen eventually, and those old ships are taken out of combat, but even then they are still used as transports or hospital ships. Rexxar View Profile View Posts. If you want to be a naval power, you need to do a significant amount of planning to research and then manufacture the designs you want. Each ship is a significant investment. After repairing the ship's thrusters and FTL drive, Penguin Pete, the shipyard captain at the outpost, will open quests to upgrade the size of the player's ship.

These quests are given where he is stationed, just west of the outpost. To upgrade your ship you will need crew members, each upgrade also increases the number of crew members which can be on the ship. There are mods available on the Steam workshop for several them that, in my opinion, are more fun to play with than the official DLC ones.
Honestly, my main reason to recommend it is the new unit models and voice overs, which help add texture and immersion to the war.
I think the content designers did an overall better job on the focuses and events in this pack than they did in Together for Victory. The new options for Japan and Germany are a lot of fun, though. It's a pretty definitive 'yes', although the caveat is if you typically avoid big naval powers or generally don't play the nations that are getting the most improvements here, then you may struggle to get much out of this.
Being able to design ships, refit and all of the other little naval goodies completely revolutionises the naval game, where-as the Government-in-Exile mechanic is crucial if you like play nations that typically can get steam-rolled by larger powers. The new focus trees, while a bit complex to navigate, also bring the four targeted nations to up to the same level of flexibility nations like Japan, Germany and the Balkan nations.
Overall, this is either tied, or a very close second, in terms of value, and the only real deciding factor is how much you enjoy the naval aspects of WW2. This one is less certain than previous expansions. If you're interested in the Iberian peninsular and playing a more fleshed out Spanish Civil War either as one of the Spanish factions, or as someone like Portugal then this is a must-have. If you don't care though, the new SCW potential can still trigger without the DLC, adding another tool to the sandbox.
The new units fill interesting little niches we didn't know were there, and the Intel system is a bit more interesting now. But things like Espionage and the new 'agencies' don't pack as much punch as we might have expected. I guess they couldn't have designed this system to be too powerful as it might upset the game for non-buyers, but as it stands it's a fun system to play around with, but it's not game-changing. Or even war-winning, although we've yet to explore that fully.
France gets some unexpected love here as well, and the free 1. A total of 35 new songs spread across three faction specific radio channels, each with their own unique look and design. The music in HOI4 is already quite good, but if you were looking to double-down on this side of things then there are worse things to spend your money on. This is pack aimed at a very specific set of WW2 enthusiasts.
If you're one of them, you probably only have this but this is basically just a cosmetic pack that adds in new skins for specific types of vehicles.
