It is the lowest level of Cambridge exam offered to adults outside the UK. The Cambridge Key exam can be either a paper-based test or a computer-based test. In either case, it lasts minutes in total. The KET exam tests all four skills — listening, reading, writing, and speaking — divided into three sections structured as follows:. Part 1 70 minutes — The first section of the KET Exam tests reading comprehension and writing ability at the same time.
It is subdivided into 9 subsections with a total of 56 questions. The questions in the first part of the test are multiple-choice then they move on to fill-in-the-blank, and in the final subsection, there is a very short writing prompt.
The reading material and writing prompts are all at a basic level of English. There are several short recordings of everyday English spoken slowly and clearly and questions about the recordings.
Each recording is played twice. Some of the questions are multiple-choice and others are fill-in-the-blank. There are a total of 25 questions in this part.
A2 Key for Schools (KET S)
Students are put into pairs and asked to have a conversation with an examiner and then with each other. This group situation is meant to be more realistic than a one-on-one conversational situation.
There is a second examiner who watches and scores but does not speak. All Cambridge English Exams are reported using the same scoring scale, although in the past each exam used a different scale.
Today, lower-level tests are able to deliver scores on a lower range of the scale and more difficult tests are able to deliver scores higher on the same scale. Scores on the KET Exam range from to Each student receives his KET results broken down by the three parts of the exam, as well as an overall result and the corresponding CEFR level. Scoring All Cambridge English Exams are reported using the same scoring scale, although in the past each exam used a different scale. The changes to Cambridge exams in will be significant for both candidates and teachers as Cambridge starts to pull away from a traditional language systems based exam and focus more on skills.
So what are the Cambridge Exam changes in ?KET sample papers. Listening. Test 3 part 1.
And how should we feel about the Cambridge updates? Officially, Cambridge says the changes are necessary in order to keep the exams in line with the latest research in language learning and teaching. They also want there to be continuity between different levels so that as learners progress through the CEFR levels, they feel familiar and comfortable with Cambridge English qualifications.
Or keep reading…. There are a whole host of changes to the PET exam in and, in my opinion, most of them are welcome. They seem to lead the exam towards a more skills based approach and away from language systems.
I personally think this reflects the changing position of English as a global language and fits better with the modern communicative style of teaching, which is favoured by a lot of language teachers. One of the most significant changes is that pre, the Reading and Writing papers of the PET exam were done together with a time limit of 1 hour and 30 minutes.
These papers have now been separated and will be completed independently with their own time limits. Most relevant to these changes is the time limit. In the previous exam, Reading and Writing were combined, which allowed candidates to be flexible with where they spent their time. For example, I found teenage candidates generally spent much less time on writing than their adult counterparts. This left them extra time to tackle challenging readings. This flexibility is now gone.
Like it or not, candidates will have to be ready and trained to complete no less than 6 reading tasks in only 45 minutes. While Cambridge claims that this has been considered and the number of questions and amount of text reduced, I think that a lot of candidates are going to have trouble completing everything asked of them in only 45 minutes. This will also challenge teachers to think of new and innovative ways of training and preparing students for the exam.
The only task that has disappeared completely is the old Reading Part 3. Obviously the challenge at B1 level is much less than at higher levels, but the same concepts apply.
Cambridge English: Key (KET)
Candidates will have to be aware of the overall construction of a text and the referencing and linking that happens between different parts of it. This task will require teachers to train their students well. However, I think it will also build skills that are applicable to writing, which is a very positive thing.
As we see at other levels, function words and the grammatical connections that they provide are the focus of this task. Nor can they only focus vocabulary building on categorised topics like travel or technology. This is another area that will definitely affect our teaching of this level and it is yet to be seen how quickly that change will happen. The big surprise here is the disappearance of transformations.View related sites.
